6 Major Types of Air Compressor Control

In the production of air compressors, it is important to design the major air compressor controls as they help in regulating the delivery of compressors in accordance with the demand.

There needs to be a control over the discharge pressures for better energy usage and much more.

The control strategies are very much essential for the better functioning of the system and high performance.

The control systems largely depend on the type of compressors used.

The system with multiple compressors are in need of heavy control strategies much greater than one that requires only one compressor with a steady demand.

Here is the list of all the six major types of compressor controls:

  • Start/Stop: This is the most basic form of compressor control that switches on and off the motor, facilitating discharges from the compressor in accordance with the pressure signal. It cannot be used in systems that require frequent cycles, because consequent starts will cause overheating. Thus are more applicable in systems with low cycle rates.  (reciprocating and rotary screw compressors)

  • Load/Unload: This control system is also widely known by the name- Constant Speed Control, because in this the motor never stops, it runs continuously, but unloads the air compressor when the desired pressure is met. It reloads again with a low discharge pressure for optimal working. (reciprocating, centrifugal, and rotary screw compressors)

  • Modulating Controls: Also known as Throttling or Capacity Control, as they modulate the compressor output in dire accordance with the flow required. This important modification or control is done by shutting the inlet value, so that inlet air stops entering the compressor and it can safely unload the consisting output. (centrifugal and rotary screw compressors)

  • Dual/Auto dual Controls: In dual controls, it allows a system that offers a selection between start/stop or load/unload in small reciprocating compressors. Whereas the auto dual control in rotary screw compressors, all modulations automatically work according to the pre-set time. At a fixed time the reduction of the capacity happens then unloading of the compressor and then stops the air compressor for a pre-set time.

  • Variable Displacement: This control system allows a gradual reduction of the air compressor discharges or outputs without reducing the inlet pressures through various valves. This scheme has a relatable connection with motor power consumption and loaded capacity. (Reciprocating and rotary screw compressors)

  • Variable Speed Drives: In accordance to the system signals these control schemes are efficient enough to adjust the air compressor capacity by varying the speed of the motor that in turn runs the compressor.

All these six major air compressor controls are seen in different types of air compressors as per the requirements.
